The Ministry of Electronics and IT has issued an order to ban 22 illegal apps and websites, cracking down on illegal betting in the country. According to the ban order issued by Ashwini Vaishnav’s ministry, mobile applications (apps) and websites used for illegal betting will be blocked.

Which apps and websites will be banned?

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, orders have been issued to block 22 illegal betting apps and websites including Mahadev Book and ReddyAnnaPristoPro. This action follows the investigation conducted by ED against an illegal betting app syndicate and the subsequent raid on Mahadev Book in Chhattisgarh.

Illegal Betting: IT Ministry’s statement regarding banning the app

According to the central government’s statement, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrashekhar said, the Chhattisgarh government had full power to recommend the closure of the website/app under Section 69A of the IT Act. However, he did not do so. Bhupesh Baghel’s government did not make any request to the Central Government to ban illegal betting apps.

The Chhattisgarh government did not appeal to close the app

According to Rajiv Chandrashekhar, the Chhattisgarh government claims that the Mahadev App case has been investigated for the last 1.5 years. In fact, this was the first and only request received from ED, taking cognizance of which the Central Government has taken action to impose restrictions. No one stopped the Chhattisgarh government from making a similar request.

Illegal operations exposed after ED action in Chhattisgarh

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed that Rs 508 crore has been given to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in connection with betting through the Mahadev App. Let us tell you that after the ED raid, the illegal operation of the Mahadev App was revealed.

What is the government doing in India about illegal betting?

Let us tell you that the main promoters of the Mahadev app which is being discussed in the case of illegal betting are Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal of Chhattisgarh. Mahadev Betting App is used for online betting. ED has been investigating this case for almost a year. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating the Mahadev App case from the money laundering angle since August 2022, claims that Aseem Das, arrested with Rs 5.39 crore, has said during interrogation that he would give the money to Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

How do bookies work?

On the methods of illegal betting, ED said that many tasks like raising money, creating user IDs, giving user ID credentials to customers, and distributing money are done by the branch owners. These branch owners are called panels. The game of online betting is done by keeping the user in the dark. This means that the user would only benefit a few rupees in the beginning. Later their money was not refunded. Giving the example of the Mahadev App, ED said that 80 percent of the profit was kept by the betting architects Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal themselves. Normally a panel consisted of the owner and four workers. A person can own more than one panel.
